With outside temperatures plummeting below 80 degrees and pumpkins being delivered to farms in bulk, we are finally experiencing the wonderful season of “autumn” here in South Florida. We may not have beautiful foliage or weather that requires scarves and mittens, but there are still things to look forward to this fall. For one thing, we have Thanksgiving coming up—which also means three whole days off from school! The holiday of Thanksgiving itself is only one day—Friday, the 28th—so we have four days to enjoy ourselves. Personally, I love to listen to music in my free time. So, here is a list of songs that I will be listening to over the break to get me into the autumn mood—feel free to take my suggestions or find your own music to listen to.
“Vienna” – Ben Platt
If you’ve watched The Politician on Netflix, you likely listened to this cover on repeat after seeing it performed in the last episode. The Dear Evan Hansen star’s angelic voice combined with the passionate piano music written by the original song’s writer, Billy Joel, makes this cover one-of-a-kind. Whether or not you’ve seen the show (I highly recommend watching it over break), this song will surely give you the chills.
“Blessed” – Daniel Caesar
This soft ballad is featured on the artist’s album Freudian, released in 2017. All of Caesar’s soulful music is so calming, you can fall asleep to it. Among all of the things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, I am definitely “blessed” to be able to listen to this song.
“Thinkin Bout You” – Frank Ocean
This is one of Ocean’s most well-known songs, if not the most. It’s another peaceful ballad that is sure to calm you down. The most unique part of the song, in my opinion, is the post-chorus, where Ocean quickly jumps an entire octave and sings unbelievably high notes almost effortlessly. The artist’s music gives off a similar vibe to that of Daniel Caesar, but with a bit more R&B/hip-hop.
“Raspberry Beret” – Prince
An oldie but a goodie. While Ben Platt’s cover of “Vienna” puts a dramatic twist on the Billy Joel song, nothing beats Prince’s original recording of this song. It can cure a bad mood in seconds. Its overall cheerfulness makes it a perfect “windows down” driving song.
“Blessings” – Chance the Rapper
A Chance classic. It’s my personal favorite song by Chance and reminds listeners that “when the praises go up, the blessings come down.” In other words, if you want things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, you need to earn them. Obviously, Chance isn’t Jewish; but regardless of who you pray to, take his advice—keep praying.
“The Bird” – Anderson .Paak
This smooth R&B song has a uniquely intricate musical composition. Anderson .Paak first began producing this song by recording himself aimlessly jamming out with friends and cutting out certain parts of the track that he thought would go well together. Then, he wrote the lyrics, addressing the complex and rough history of his family and how they’ve impacted his life. It’s an incredible song, and it will remind you of the very animal you’ll be feasting on during Thanksgiving.
“YOSEMITE” – Travis Scott
A steady beat blended with the sound of a peaceful flute makes this song stand out from typical rap. It can really pump you up in the morning and it’s one of the more popular songs on Scott’s legendary album, Astroworld. The song has been noted for its eerie similarity to the equally catchy song “Sold Out Dates,” released just a few months before.
“It Gets Better” – Rex Orange County
Even the biggest Rex fans can admit that his music is an acquired taste. Unlike most of his songs, however, this one follows a typical verse-chorus structure. It maintains an eclectic sound throughout, with a fast, exciting rhythm that really gets you in your feels, this song is one of my all-time favorites.
“BLEACH” – BROCKHAMPTON
Sorry if the capital letters startled you. You can blame BROCKHAMPTON for that, as all of the rap group’s album and song titles (and their own group name) are written completely in capital letters. The group consists of a whopping 14 members, allowing them to produce tons of music in short amounts of time—they’ve released five full albums since 2016, three of which came out in 2017. I love the song “BLEACH” for its groovy melody, but I suggest you take a listen to other BROCKHAMPTON songs as well.
“Applesauce” – Sam.Sts
I’d say there about a 1 in a million chance you’ve heard this song before. A friend of mine randomly came across this song during my Israel trip this summer, and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. It’s by far the most feel-good song on this entire list, and it’s quite similar in style to Rex Orange County’s music. In the song, the eighteen-year-old artist describes his dream girl and imagines the perfect life he could live with her. It’s great for singing in the car and it will definitely put you in a good mood.
