On November 28, 2017, AIPAC’s Broward division hosted their annual event at the Gallery of Amazing Things in Dania Beach. Approximately 500 pro-Israel advocates packed the ballroom to listen to speakers Jeremy Bash (former Chief of Staff for the Department of Defense and the C.I.A.), Lesli Rosenblatt (AIPAC’s Broward Area Director), and others. The speakers told the story of their personal journey into the world of pro-Israel activism, and what AIPAC’s path forward must be in 2017.

Lesli Rosenblatt, one of the first speakers, spoke about how AIPAC acts in real-time to the constantly evolving problems and conflicts that relate to Israel. She listed the major emotional events in recent years -Operation Protective Edge, the Iran Deal, and the 2016 election- and how there was no clear “emotional rollercoaster” this year. She then proceeded to list over 20 legislative accomplishments which AIPAC and its members actively lobbied for, and how the enactment of these bills is the crowning accomplishment of AIPAC in 2017. Mrs. Rosenblatt spoke about the growth of the US-Israel relationship following the 2016 election the addition of 55 new members of Congress. A staggering 70% of these freshman members joined AIPAC on a mission to Israel. AIPAC’s goal of the mission was so the members of Congress can experience the challenges Israel faces on a first-hand basis. In their short tenure in Congress, these members have a voting record that shows clear support for the State of Israel. Mrs. Rosenblatt closed her speech with a message of how every AIPAC member has a important role in the U.S.-Israel relationship.

The next speaker, Jeremy Bash, addressed his role in the hunt for Osama bin-Laden, what ultimately prompted Bash to national fame. Bash explained how in the beginning, they received a plethora of tips on bin-Laden but most proved to be false. Unfortunately, one of these false tips led to the death of 9 American serviceman after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive at a C.I.A. Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan. After all the leads on bin-Laden had dried out, the C.I.A. received a tip -that led to his death- on his whereabouts. Once this information was proved credible, Bash, along with high-ranking officials in the C.I.A. and the Armed Forces, organized and plotted a raid that would end in the death of a man responsible for over 3,000 America death.

AIPAC’s mission of supporting a strong U.S.-Israel relationship based on bipartisanship is something Americans should cherish in today’s heated political climate. The Broward Annual Event was an amazing opportunity to hear about one of the greatest military plans in history, and to learn more about what America does to support Israel when she needs it most.
