Maccabi Tzair @ the Posnack JCC!

What do you do on the weekends? Hang out with friends? Sleep until 2 p.m.? Over 15 current Posnack high schoolers can say that they volunteer every weekend at the David Posnack JCC as part of Maccabi Tzair. Maccabi is an international Jewish youth group dedicated to informally education children between 5 and 18 years old. Among the participating students, many hold positions in the leadership board: Deborah Ghelman is Rosh Gesher, in charge of counselors and leadership program, Esther Cusnir, Rosh Gisbar, in charge of logistics, Maia Weinstein, Rosh Shorashim, in charge of Education, Jessica Esquenazi, Rosh Tikshoret, in charge of social media and marketing, and me, Rosh Hanaga, President.

These high schoolers develop leadership skills by planning educational activities every week for a group of children between the ages of 5 and 15. They are called “Madrichim,” or “counselors” in Hebrew. Every year, they attend a few leadership seminars run by the international leadership board of Maccabi, where Rabbis, college professors, and zionistic experts from all over the world teach them about educating children on Judaism, Zionism, and more. Posnack students have traveled to San Diego, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Argentina, and many other places for these prestigious conferences.

Posnack junior Maia Weinstein, who works with 5-7-year-olds at Maccabi, says she joined the organization because “I wanted to make a lasting impact on the life of a child, and Maccabi was the perfect place to do that.” Maia has learned about commitment, dedication, creativity, and passion through this movement. It has taught her social skills as well as management skills.

From my personal experience with this movement, I can truly call it my second home. As president of Maccabi Tzair Ft. Lauderdale, I invite students of all ages, from 5 years old to 18, to be a part of this wonderful organization.
